Former UUA President Rev. Bill Sinkford And Unitarian Universalist Clergy Sexual Misconduct Cover-Up And Denial - What's The Connection?

How about this plagU*Urized parody version of this Rev. Bill Sinkford blog post?

A school child has been sexually exploited by a pedophile Unitarian Universalist minister.

Again.

What are U*Us called to DO in response to The Pennsylvania Pedophile?

I want to name, first, my own misinformation and lies because I believe they are shared by many in our "Beloved Community". We U*Us seem willing to minimize, cover-up, and even officially deny the "irregular" and despicable sexual exploitation of innocent school children and "religion shoppers" and U*U church goers aka U*U "worship" attenders, not to mention teenage Tibetan refugees. . .

We U*Us now accept such clergy sex abuse cover-up and denial as normal in this “tiny, declining, fringe religion.”

The pronouns are important here. I trust that “we” U*Us, those reading this message, are still willing to accept clergy sexual misconduct, including my own. . . as UNavoidable. Yes “we,” the larger we of this Unitarian*Universalist rape culture, have demonstrated again and again our ability to accept clergy sexual misconduct cover-up and denial as a consequence of our willful ignorance and psychological denial.

I also want to name the sense of powerlessness to prevent such U*U clergy sex abuse cover-up and denial from being exposed by The Emerson Avenger. The Emerson Avenger's disempowering of "people of ill will and lying hearts" such as the UUA's Stikeman Elliott Barristurds & Bullshitters Canadian attorney Maître Marc-André Coulombe is a tragedy in and of itself. And the FAILure to act not only compounds the trauma of the victim families, but compromises the hope that CHANGE is possible.

That FAILure also calls into question the virtue(s) and the value(s) of our “Beloved Community.”

We do offer our thoughts and prayers and hold the victims and their families and that Pennsylvania Pedophile in our hearts. But we also recognize that Unitarian*Universalist "thoughts and prayers" have not moved our "elected" UUA leaders to make more than token change to Unitarian*Universalism's clergy misconduct policies and procedures.

There will be protests outside the Unitarian "Church" of Montreal and The Emerson Avenger blog posts as there should not be. There will be protests and U*UTube videos when Montreal Unitarians ask Québec Superior Court to hand down a decision to repress The Emerson Avenger's peaceful public protests, and order him to "memory hole" everything he has posted to the internet about Rev. Diane Olenick Rollert, Marlo Turner Ritchie, and Stanislaus Mackiewicz. There will be NO Unitarian*Universalist marches and vigils when the next Unitarian*Universalist sexual abuse of a Black or Brown or White body breaks into the news.

The Emerson Avenger's protests and whistleblowing call for CHANGE. They name #TheTruth that our "Beloved Community" does NOT want to acknowledge #TheTruth about not only U*U clergy sexual misconduct itself, but our "Beloved Community's" past and ongoing efforts to not only minimize clergy sexual misconduct in general, but even attempt to cover-up and officially deny, "such despicable crimes as pedophilia and rape" committed by "less than perfect" Unitarian*Universalist ministers, to say nothing of UUA Religious Educators and other U*U lay leaders.

I have spent most of my life trying to abuse our system to serve and protect misconducting Unitarian Univeralist ministers, not cut that clergy misconduct off. Most of you U*Us have as well.

But today I believe it is our system that needs changing. Our clergy sex abuse cover-up system. Our system consistently FAILs to enforce decisions that violate the expressed principles and purposes of Unitarian Universalism. Our system has FAILed us by being UNable to completely silence The Emerson Avenger.

And that conclusion poses a real problem for progressive religious communities. Because we have lived by the separation of "church" and integrity for so long. Held that as such a U*U value.

I do not have a solution to that dilemma. But I cannot deny what my most inauthentic response is to this tragedy and to the devolution and degeneration of our "tiny, declining, fringe religion" that it reveals.

And I need to name another real fear that is with me this morning. We may have allowed these flaws in our clergy abuse cover-up system to go on too long. There may be too many Tweets, blog posts, and U*UTube videos now in legal circulation for us U*Us to pull out from our fucking around and finding out. We may have allowed the self-delusion and denial with which we U*Us live, and The Emerson Avenger's protests and whistleblowing to go on too long. We may have despoiled this U*U World beyond repair.

I fear that this vaunted experiment in justice, which never approached real justice, may be beyond redemption.

I am not yet ready to accept that as an inevitable conclusion.

But I need to name my fear of The Emerson Avenger.

We are living with the results of a clergy sex abuse cover-up system designed from the beginning, by the “Founding Fathers” of Unitarian*Univeralism to protect U*U clergy privilege and minority rule.

I believe we can't afford to give real justice a chance.

You know that I am a hypocritical preacher. You’ve heard me often preach about how hard it is to maintain faith that integrity just might be better than hypocrisy and lies, if we make it so.

What are we called to do as "religious" people?

Offer our thoughts and prayers to victims of U*U clergy sex abuse?

Yes, we will do that. Again.

Work to model how we want to tell lies in this congregation and in our lives?

Yes, we will do that. Again and always.

Show up for The Emerson Avenger's protests and vigils?

Yes, we will do that. Again.

But our church politics need to change. Our church politics are working against Truth. Our church politics are the biggest obstacle to Unitarian Universalism thriving. That means, for people committed to the power of lies, that we need to find ways to change our church politics while we still have the chance.

Bill
