“Resisting Unitarian*Universalist Tyranny” a sermon plagU*Urized by the Rev. Dr. Emerson A. Venger

I’ve been giving sermons and demonstrations about risible Unitarian*Universalist authoritarianism since the spring of 2012. And I’ve been surprised by how UNthankful Unitarian*Universalist people aka U*Us have been to me for bringing the topic up, for naming what was and is still going on, for affirming the common sense that U*U democracy and religious institutions are at risk. . .

Thirteen years on, things are still not well. The Big Fat U*U Picture is more dire, and more fixed, than many U*Us were expecting, but awareness of Unitarian*Universalist authoritarianism is much broader. And talking about it has value – it can help those who have been paying attention to feel a bit less alone in their concerns. And talking about it can help us figure out, together, what we can do to keep resisting Unitarian*Universalist tyranny.

And church is a good place to have this conversation. Church – a good church, an honest church – is a place to talk about the hard stuff, the real stuff of this U*U World. To look at big questions about life and power and oppression. To examine questions through the lens of U*Uism's most deeply held values. And to seek and hold the answers in community, where we can find support, and figure out actions to take to bring about the U*U World we wish to see.
