I was frankly appalled when about a month after I signed up recently for the 3-month trial membership, I received an email specifying that I needed to pony up some cash shortly before the end of the trial membership or I would be summarily dropped from the roster.
No, "Any questions I might answer for you?" or even a simple, better-timed, "Are you finding your trial membership worthwhile? If not, what might we do to improve the experience for you and future members?"
Nope, just...Send money or else.
But then, this reflects my experience with CLF years ago when after nearly 15 years of membership, I lost my job and was scrambling to make ends meet. As a result, I quit making contributions.
I received not even so much as a form letter inquiring if I was all right or needed help in any way. This despite the fact that I had sent monthly pledge payments typically had never failed to fulfill my pledge. After a few months, mailings from CLF simply ceased to arrive.
Somehow, I was left thinking that this pretty much was a one-way church membership. As long as the checks kept coming in and didn't bounce, we had a "relationship." In short, the product would no longer arrive once payments ceased.
Silly me for thinking that things might have changed for the better in the interim.
All things considered, perhaps I should have asked -
Is U*Uism a religion or some kind of business?
